McDonalds’ current corporate strategy is to re-invigorate the brand by ‘making dining a more modern and relevant experience’.

Citizens, both young and old, now have access to a touch screen computer with Internet and e-mail within UK restaurants. This service has expanded it’s usership to more than 2000 customers each day logging on for greater than 22 minutes duration. Only 40 restaurants have currently internet terminals offering e-government, social and revenue opportunities, we are expanding to 850 restaurants; serving 15.5 million 22 minute sessions each year, by the end of 2005.

We approached DVE to develop these public access Internet solution. As I am sure you can fully appreciate, a fast food outlet is not the most hospitable of environments for a PC. It was agreed with DVE that the solution would have to be reliable and robust enough to cope with heavy usage and be strong enough to stand up to heavy wear and tear. Drink spillages are also likely in our environment, so the terminals have to be able to cope with life in a McDonald’s. The terminals also have to look good, to fit in with our corporate identity.

I have no hesitation in supporting DVE’s nomination for e-government usership growth
