As part of the Millennium Refurbishment, the British Museum commissioned Data Vision (Europe) to design, engineer and manufacture touch screen computers to be made available in the world famous Reading Rooms. These terminals provide access to a database containing information about object and artefacts, archives, images and background information. Technical terms are explained in a glossary and references to books have been given for most articles. Fabricated from aviation grade aluminium, these terminals had to be up to the challenge of being used by the museums 3 million visitors a year.
During this project DVE worked alongside Foster & Partners, the renowned architects and the entire Compass team to create a unique solution with English Heritage approval currently found in the world famous Reading Rooms. This will provide Internet access for all learned institutions to online electronic information about artefacts and priceless heritage treasures contained within the Museum. DVE's Compass PC's also provide the visitors with the ability to plan a tour of the Museum itself, save any information that is relevant to them onto a Smartcard and create their very own personal folder.
